Must We Thrive?
Must We Thrive?
There is a type of human-economical Zeitgeist, one with a premise that we exist as biological economic production units — money our soul intent, expressed by the cliché — “Thrive Not Survive”. A phrase which makes me nauseous.
Why must we thrive? Why can we not be?
I find the economical unit premise obscure and insulting. Read a book on productivity, economics, or business, and somewhere in there, subtly, and sometimes buried deep below the page - you will find the rationale that life is economic growth, with humans the drivers of the machine. Our sole purpose to look after the GDP of the collective.
But, Thrive can be: to be a writer, a photographer, a traveller, a teacher, and many others be’s. Being with no venality might be the thing giving you the freedom to pursue the thing which leads, ironically, to your economic freedom.
